Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by high glucose levels, and results from abnormalities in insulin secretion, or insulin action. Insulin, which is produced by the pancreas, is responsible for regulating the blood glucose levels. In diabetics, the absence or insufficient production of insulin causes high blood sugar.
So, how can you treat diabetes?
Eat The Right Type Of Carbohydrates
There are two types of carbohydrates: sugary and starchy.
Sugary: for example, sugar, sweets, chocolate, sweet biscuits and soft drinks. It is best to avoid them, because they cause glucose to rapidly enter the circulatory system and can cause a sudden rise in your blood sugar levels. Instead of sugar you can use artificial sweeteners, like saccharin.
Starchy: for example, bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, cereals and fruits. They are carbohydrates of slower absorption and are good sources of energy, so you can eat them regularly during the day.
Eat The Right Type Of Fats
Equally important is the type of fat you consume. There are two basic types: saturated and unsaturated.
Saturated: saturated fats are found mainly in fatty meats, whole milk, butter and lard. They can cause problems in blood circulation. We all need to reduce the consumption of such fats.
Unsaturated: these fats are better than the saturated ones and come in two forms:
- Polyunsaturated fats are found in large quantities in products such as sunflower oil, pure vegetable oil, corn oil and margarine from sunflower oil.
- Monounsaturated fat, found in grape seed oil and olive oil. This type of fat should be preferred. Remember that all fats are high in calories and can therefore lead to weight gain, if consumed in excessive quantities.
Eat The Right Fiber
The fiber can be either soluble (dissolves in water and slows down the absorption of food) or insoluble (does not dissolve in water and is good from preventing constipation). The insoluble fiber is also helpful when dieting, because it provides you with a sense of fullness.
